Compulsory · 100 marks
The most mechanical paper in the compulsory group: precis writing, comprehension, grammar, idioms, sentence correction, pair of words and translation, each carrying its own marks.
24 papers, 2000 to 2024
Precis and Composition rewards drilling more than any other compulsory paper. Every section has a known shape, the question types repeat almost unchanged from year to year, and the marking is closer to right-or-wrong than anywhere else in the exam.
CSS 2025 mean score
32.0/100
That is the average mark real candidates scored on this paper in CSS 2025, against a 40 percent pass requirement. Our full analysis breaks down the score spread, pass rates and provincial split for all six compulsory papers.
Read the CSS 2025 compulsory results analysisWork through the papers section by section rather than year by year. Do fifteen years of precis passages in a row and the expected compression ratio and register become obvious.
Keep a running list of the idioms and pairs of words that appear. Repeats across years are frequent enough that the list is worth memorising outright.
Time each section separately. Candidates lose this paper by spending an hour on the precis and rushing everything after it.
Compulsory papers are fixed at 600 marks for every candidate. Your optional subjects are the 600 you choose, and they decide your aggregate. Our assessment matches them to your degree and coursework using FPSC result data.
